The Bridge of Khazad-Dûm from Aragorn's POV

malufaria

There we were, in the Chamber of Mazarbul, deep in the caverns of Moria. We had just read in Ori’s diary that they had gotten trapped in the Chamber, so the rest of the Company and I were fearing for the worst. Suddenly, I heard noise that seemed to be coming from far away in the cave. Then, a horn was blown, and I could steps of a crowd coming in our direction.

“They are coming!” cried Legolas. I wasn’t fully sure what he was talking about, but, from the freighted look on his face I knew it was bad.

Gandalf and Gimli realized that we were trapped and couldn’t get out, just like Ori once had been. The doom, doom continued, and the walls shook: they were getting close.

“Slam the doors and wedge them!” I shouted. “And keep your packs on as long as you can: we may get a chance to cut our way out yet.”

“No!” said Gandalf. “We must not get shut in. Keep the east door ajar! We will go that way, if we get a chance.”

I was trying to do my most to protect my companions, but Gandalf had much more experience than me, and, such as Legolas and different from the rest of us, he truly knew how dangerous and serious the situation was.

We heard another horn-call and drew our swords. Boromir went to hold the door, but Gandalf stopped him. The wizard called for whoever was in the hall and stepped outside for brief moment. There was light coming from his staff. I saw arrows flying down corridor as he stepped back.

“There are Orcs, very many of them,” he said. I had never seen Orcs before, but at least knowing what I was about to face gave me a sense of security.

Standing by the eastern door, I was trying to listen to any sound they made. The adrenaline of having to fight for my and my friend’s lifes made me braver, and I felt ready to battle those Orcs. As I felt the edge of my sword, Anduril, I said to my companions: “We will make them fear the Chamber of Mazarbul!”

Boromir was trying to hold the door, but a huge arm started to open it from the hall. My fellow human tried to hit the arm with his sword; that just fell from his hand.

Suddenly, Frodo stabbed the being with Sting, and screamed: “The Shire!” The hobbit surprised all but me. I had taken a liking towards the little man, and I always knew he was brave beyond his size.

“One for the Shire! The hobbit’s bite is deep! You have a good blade, Frodo son of Drogo!” I said, quite proud.

The Orcs barged in, and there were too many to count. There were arrows whistling in. The only thing I could think of was to kill as many as I could with my sword; and I did. From the corner of my eye, I could see Boromir doing the same thing, Legolas shooting a couple with his bow, and Gimli fighting another.

I counted thirteen fallen, and the rest just left shrieking. I looked to see if the rest of the Company was unharmed, and just Sam had a scratch on his head.

“Now is the time!” cried Gandalf. “Let us go, before the troll returns!” I couldn’t agree more. We started to make our way out, and Merry and Pippin had reached the stairs outside, when a huge Orc appeared. Boromir and I made advances, but he dodged them both with his shield. I had been more scared in that moment than in at any point of the journey. His blow when straight at Frodo, who was pinned to the wall. I could Sam let out a loud cry, but I couldn’t let it distract me. I sprang at his followers, on a last try of protecting the Company, after failing to protect my hobbit friend.

Gandalf told us to run, so I picked up Frodo and went for the stairs. I pushed Merry and Pippin in front of me, and the others followed behind.

“I am all right. I can walk. Put me down!” said Frodo.

Relief came over me. “I thought you were dead!” I said, amazed. I was glad he was well, but we still weren’t out of there.

Gandalf said he wanted to stay to hold the doors. I protested, but we did as he said. We went down the stairs and saw a stab a of white light coming from the top. Then, Gandalf came flying down the steps and fell on the ground.

The doom, doom didn’t stop until we reached the bridge. We went through the Great Gates, and I could see the sky and the sunlight. Dimrill Dale lay before me. We were finally out of Moria.
